How Professional Cleaning Removes Hidden Pet Allergens

If someone in your house reacts to the cat, they're not reacting to fur. The trigger is a protein - Fel d 1 for cats, Can f 1 for dogs - produced in saliva, skin and sebaceous glands, spread across the coat during grooming, and then shed on flakes of skin far too small to see. Understanding that changes what "cleaning up after a pet" actually has to mean.

Why cat allergen behaves so differently

Fel d 1 is unusually small and unusually sticky. A large share of it travels on particles under 5 microns, which means it stays suspended in room air for hours after any disturbance rather than settling like heavier dust. It also adheres to fabric and clothing, which is why it's routinely detected in schools, offices and homes that have never had a cat - people carry it in.

The other well-documented finding: after a cat is permanently removed from a home, allergen levels can take several months of sustained cleaning to fall to the levels found in homes that never had one. It doesn't just air out.

Where it actually accumulates

• Carpet and rugs - the biggest reservoir in most homes. Fibres trap allergen down near the backing where a household vacuum never reaches.
• Upholstery and mattresses - especially anywhere the animal sleeps. Fabric sofas hold far more than leather.
• Curtains, cushions and bedding - vertical fabric catches airborne allergen constantly and gets cleaned once a year, if that.
• Skirting boards, floor edges and under furniture - where airflow deposits fine particles.
• Car interiors and clothing - the transport network that keeps reintroducing it.

What actually removes it

Hot water extraction on carpet and upholstery. Allergen bound in the base of the pile has to be flushed and vacuumed out - dry surface methods don't reach it. This is the single largest reduction available in most homes.

Sealed HEPA vacuuming, done slowly. A standard vacuum without sealed HEPA filtration will pull fine allergen in and blow a share of it straight back into the room - measurably worsening airborne levels during use. Slow passes matter too; most people move a vacuum head about three times faster than it can actually extract.

Damp microfibre on hard surfaces. Dry dusting relocates allergen into the air. Damp cloth captures it.

Washing soft furnishings at 60°C. Bedding, throws, pet blankets and cushion covers. Below 60°C, allergen is diluted rather than removed.

Being honest about what it achieves

Cleaning reduces allergen load. It does not make an allergic person non-allergic, and studies on single interventions - vacuuming alone, or an air purifier alone - generally show modest results. What does show results is combining them: reservoir removal, HEPA filtration, hot washing, and keeping the pet out of the bedroom. The bedroom rule is the one people resist most and it's consistently one of the most effective, simply because it's where you spend eight uninterrupted hours breathing the same air.
